Framed Board and Batten Shutters
Framed Board and Batten shutters take everything that makes the classic Board and Batten style so beloved and give it a more refined, architectural treatment. The addition of a structural frame — stiles on the sides and rails across the top and bottom — brings a sense of order and intention to the bold vertical lines of the boards and battens within. The result is a shutter that feels simultaneously rustic and polished, at home on a traditional farmhouse and equally suited to a more formal exterior. If you love the honest character of Board and Batten but want something with a little more structure and presence, this is the style for you.
Wood Species
The wood species you choose shapes everything about your Framed Board and Batten shutters — how they age, how they perform, and how they look the day they go up. Each species we offer brings its own character to the table. Western Red Cedar and Cypress are natural performers with built-in resistance to moisture and decay, making them a natural fit for the grounded, unpretentious spirit of this style. Spanish Cedar offers exceptional stability and a distinguished finish. White Oak brings density, strength, and a rich grain that gives both the frame and the vertical boards real visual presence. Meranti Mahogany delivers deep, warm tones that bring unexpected refinement to a style that balances rustic charm with architectural polish. If you prefer a painted finish right out of the box, our primed shutters arrive ready for your color of choice.
Rail Style
The rails and stiles are what set the Framed Board and Batten apart from its unframed counterpart — and getting those proportions right is what gives this style its signature sense of structure and balance. Our shutters are built with rail and stile dimensions scaled to the width of each shutter, ensuring the frame always complements the boards and battens within rather than competing with them. Narrower shutters feature slightly lighter framing, while wider shutters step up in dimension to maintain the right visual weight across the full face of the shutter. The frame brings the whole composition together — and ours are built to do exactly that.
How to Size Shutters for Your Windows
A well-sized shutter makes all the difference — and with the structured, layered look of the Framed Board and Batten style, proper sizing ensures every element lands exactly as it should. As a general rule, each shutter in a pair should be half the width of the window opening, so that if the shutters were closed they would cover the window completely. For height, shutters should match the full height of the window from the top of the trim to the bottom. When in doubt, measure twice — a shutter that is even an inch off can affect the overall look more than most people expect. If you have questions about sizing for your specific windows, we are happy to help you get it right before you order.
