Board and Batten Shutters

Board and Batten shutters are one of the oldest and most beloved shutter styles in American architecture — and it isn't hard to see why. Their bold vertical lines and honest, straightforward construction carry a character that feels rooted, authentic, and genuinely handcrafted. This is a shutter style that has graced farmhouses, cottages, and craftsman homes for generations, and it looks just as right today as it ever has. If you want a shutter that makes a statement through simplicity rather than ornamentation, Board and Batten is the style for you.

Wood Species

The wood species you choose shapes everything about your Board and Batten shutters — how they age, how they perform, and how they look the day they go up. Each species we offer brings its own character to the table. Western Red Cedar and Cypress are natural performers with built-in resistance to moisture and decay, making them a natural fit for the rugged, unpretentious spirit of this style. Spanish Cedar offers exceptional stability and a distinguished finish. White Oak brings density, strength, and a rich grain that gives the broad vertical boards of this style real visual presence. Meranti Mahogany delivers deep, warm tones that bring unexpected refinement to a style known for its bold simplicity. If you prefer a painted finish right out of the box, our primed shutters arrive ready for your color of choice.

Board Size

The boards are the heart of the Board and Batten style — and their width plays a significant role in the overall look and feel of the finished shutter. Our boards range between 3" and 5-1/2" in width depending on the overall shutter width, and are fitted tightly together with no gaps between them for a clean, solid appearance. The batten strips that run vertically across the face of the shutter tie everything together, reinforcing the bold vertical character that makes this style so immediately recognizable. Every board and batten is carefully selected for a uniform, consistent appearance across the full face of the shutter.

How to Size Shutters for Your Windows

A well-sized shutter makes all the difference — and with the strong vertical presence of the Board and Batten style, getting the proportions right is especially important. As a general rule, each shutter in a pair should be half the width of the window opening, so that if the shutters were closed they would cover the window completely. For height, shutters should match the full height of the window from the top of the trim to the bottom. When in doubt, measure twice — a shutter that is even an inch off can affect the overall look more than most people expect. If you have questions about sizing for your specific windows, we are happy to help you get it right before you order.
